Royce is probably out of the age range by now. It's great to see what's going on where you are. It's a wonderful thing you're doing and it makes me especially happy to read that no individuals should be beyond inclusion!mhkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09824535162225016668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324536562204251762.post-36759243320254689672012-05-13T17:52:17.806-04:002012-05-13T17:52:17.806-04:00I am so sorry that happened, and that you had a ne...I am so sorry that happened, and that you had a negative experience with camping. Unfortunately there are camps out there that decide they simply will not take campers with severe disabilities, as you've seen, which I think is just wrong. Every camp program can be adapted to fit every camper; it just requires more effort on the part of the camp.

If you think camp would still be a good experience for your loved one, I can attempt to give you more information if you'd like.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06936542397551717650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324536562204251762.post-29296857592432739852012-05-12T10:10:31.042-04:002012-05-12T10:10:31.042-04:00I tried to enrol Royce in a camp a few years ago. ...I tried to enrol Royce in a camp a few years ago. I felt it would be a great experience for him with people who were well trained to cater for his needs. His application was refused because his needs were deemed to be too great. I felt so let down and betrayed. I felt so sad for Royce. I've never bothered applying again.mhkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09824535162225016668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324536562204251762.post-37909372206497840542012-05-09T05:35:50.713-04:002012-05-09T05:35:50.713-04:00If only we had something as good as this in Austra...If only we had something as good as this in Australia! There has been a great surge of camps for kids with autism, since that is becoming a more prevalent condition, but comparatively few for people with severe or multiple disabilities.

I frequently wish that I was a multimillionaire, because I would build up camps specifically for people who need one-to-one attention and staff them with great folks... unfortunately I am nowhere near being that wealthy, so I do what I can to help families find programs.

I do agree that there are not a lot of specialized one-to-one camps, and I know that they can be expensive, sometimes prohibitively expensive.

At the camp I work at now, our counselors are very well-trained, and because of our program set-up, someone would be able to sleep with your daughter at night. I wish there was a program like ours closer to LA.

(By the way, I have been reading your blog for almost two years now, and I absolutely love it. I think, though, that not enough is said about the difficulty of finding camps that serve those with disabilities (here in Los Angeles, a city with over ten million people, we have literally ONE camp that serves those with severe disabilities and it's very expensive) and then paying for them or having the resources to send an aide/nurse. I have always wanted to have my daughter attend a camp, but because of her epilepsy, either my husband or I sleep with her at night, something that can't be replicated at camp! I can dream, though...Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03313726816776097840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3324536562204251762.post-55048208088439076662012-05-07T22:50:47.442-04:002012-05-07T22:50:47.442-04:00This is a great post, full of good information.
